Hearings on 2008 Presidential Delegate Process & Affirmative Action Goals will take place this Sunday. Details…
The California Democratic Party is holding hearings around the state in the month of June to discuss the 2008 delegate selection process for the Democratic National Convention (August 25-28, 2008 in Denver).
The purpose of the hearings is to explain the process of how a registered to vote Democrat in California can become a delegate (in 2008) to the National Convention and to determine the appropriate Affirmative-Action goals (quotas are prohibited). We have used this basic process from 1988 on.
Registered Independent voters are allowed to vote in the Democratic Primary so anyone may attend to hear about the process, but only registered Democrats can speak or submit comments to the committee. Those unable to attend one of the hearings will soon be able to access the Draft of the 2008 Delegate Selection Plan and submit their questions and comments by going to www.cadem.org/Delegate08.
California Democrats have been allocated 440 Delegates to the National Convention. These include 70 Superdelegates (members of Congress and Democratic National Committee members) but the other 370 Delegates will be allocated to the candidates who do well in the February 5, 2008 California Primary (receive 15 percent or more of the vote).
Below are the dates and locations for the LA and SF hearings (both sites are accessible for persons with disabilities). Other hearings will be held in other cities and announced soon.
The Executive Board will vote to adopt the final Plan at the July 13-15 meeting in Sacramento.
