California Secretary of State
Debra Bowen
The Integrity of the Electronic Voting Systems in California
The Lamorinda Democratic Club, with members from all over Contra Costa County, prepares for the coming presidential primary election with a very special event in coordination with the Rossmoor Democratic Club, San Ramon Valley Democratic Club, Diablo Valley Democratic Club, El Cerrito Democratic Club and Central Contra Costa County United Democratic Campaign.
The program features California Secretary of State Debra Bowen on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7pm at the Contra Costa County Jewish Community Center, Koret Auditorium, 2071 Tice Valley Blvd., Walnut Creek.
As Contra Costa County had the highest voter turn-out in the state in the last general election, it is fitting that Secretary Bowen speak before us to address the growing controversy over her decision to decertify touchscreen voting machines because studies have borne out concerns that these machines might not protect the vote. All members of the community are welcome to attend. This event will likely be sold out, so come early. Suggested donations of $10 per attendee will be accepted at the door.
Until Kathryn Harris served as the Secretary of State in Florida during the 2000 Presidential Race, few people understood the importance of this role. Secretary Bowen has elevated her role to a new level of integrity, and she remains responsive to all residents of California, regardless of political affiliation. She is a pioneer in open government and has become a national leader and advocate for voting system integrity.
Please come support Ms. Bowen who has taken a courageous stance against Diebold and other voting machine companies, by demanding integrity in the electoral process. We saw how important a Secretary of State can be in the Florida debacle in 2000 as Kathryn Harris permitted her biases to influence the outcome of the Gore-Bush election. Ms. Bowen is being sued by at least one county registrar who has ties to voting machine companies. Let us learn how we can work together to protect the vote!
Ms. Bowenâs goal is to make sure that votes are secure, auditable, and transparent and that every vote is counted as it was cast.
Members of the community who are not yet affiliated with a local Democratic organization and who want to volunteer to work on the upcoming campaign will have an opportunity to learn about organizations and activities in their neighborhoods.
